South Dakota

In order to obtain a license in cosmetology, esthetics or nail technology in the state of South Dakota, students must complete the requirements listed below. Please contact the South Dakota Cosmetology Commission for more information.

Requirements
The South Dakota Cosmetology Commission shall issue a license to any person who meets the following requirements:

  • 18 years or older
  • Evidence of completion of high school or GED
  • Submission of application to Cosmetology Commission
  • Pay examination fee, which includes the first license
  • Passage of 3 examinations – NIC national written, NIC national practical, and South Dakota state laws

Required hours of education from an approved South Dakota cosmetology school are as follows:
COSMETOLOGY: 2100 hours
ESTHETICS: 600 hours
NAIL TECHNOLOGY: 400 hours

Reciprocity
You may become a licensed cosmetologist, esthetician or nail technician in South Dakota through reciprocity if your current state license has equal or greater requirements than South Dakota. (If you do not have a current license, then you should apply as an out-of-state student.)
