Maryland

In order to obtain a license in cosmetology, nail technology, esthetics or make-up artistry in the state of Maryland, students must complete the requirements listed below. Please contact the Maryland Board of Cosmetology for more information.

Requirements
Applicants must be at least 17 years of age and have completed the 9th grade or G.E.D. Applicants for cosmetologist, esthetician, nail technician and senior cosmetologist must pass an examination in order to qualify for a license.

COSMETOLOGIST: Applicant must submit proof of completion of 1500 hours of training in a cosmetology school or 24 months as a registered apprentice in a licensed beauty salon.

ESTHETICIAN: Applicant must submit proof of completion of 600 hours of training in a cosmetology school or 12 months as a registered apprentice in a licensed beauty salon.

NAIL TECHNICIAN: Applicant must submit proof of completion of at least 250 hours of training in a cosmetology school or 8 months as a registered apprentice in a licensed beauty salon.

MAKEUP ARTIST: Applicant must submit proof of having successfully completed a course or program in makeup artist services approved by the Board.

SENIOR COSMETOLOGIST: Must submit proof of working for 24 months as a licensed cosmetologist in a licensed cosmetology salon or barber shop and qualify by examination given by the Board.

Reciprocity
Individuals are eligible for a license by endorsement (reciprocity) if they:

  • Possess a current license in another state
  • Can provide certification that their license was obtained under the same standards as required in Maryland
  • Has a license that is in good standing and current
